Bookshelf Headboards

How to create a more romantic atmosphere in the bedroom?

I'm looking for ideas to make our bedroom more of a romantic place. My first thought is red sheets and red pillows and lots of, well, red, but it seems that might be overdoing it. Was wondering if anyone could offer me any tips on design? Right now we have a double bed, two mismatched dressers (we're 20, it was stuff our parents had extra of when we moved in together!), a nightstand, three bookshelves...no headboard, and a TV. We don't have a lot of money to work with and we're not allowed to paint, we live in an apartment. Any great, relatively cheap ideas? Thanks!

  1. for a guy...looks of the room isn't all that important as far as romance goes. Soft lighting...and some kind a good smell. Usually vanilla.
  2. Silky sheets and blankets, candles, softer lighting, flowers.... Maybe a nice floor mat.
  3. ok, first get a fog machine, and some "fog juice", a black light, some glow sticks, and some glow braclet/necklace things like you'd see at a concert, make a mix CD of some good bumpin & grindin music.... and well have fun.
  4. Umm..You can start by maybe painting your mismatched dressers. just varnish them a dark brown color. This might seem a little crazy but try putting gold into the room..like some gold pillows or something! my room is like this and it looks very romantic and really nice. Also you can buy like the candle holders that are the metal wired ones and just put candles every where!!!
  5. TAKING THE TV OUT WILL WORK WONDERS. HAVING A TELEVISION IN THE BEDROOM DISTRACTS FROM EVERYTHING EVEN IF IT IS OFF. THE BEDROOM IS A PLACE FOR ESCAPE AND RELAXATION AND THE TELEVISION CREATES CHAOS
  6. Start with lots of candles. Then above your bed make a canopy. You can find this in any local store and it does not cost much. Their called scarf's for your windows. But you can use them for allot of things as a canopy above your bed.Since you said you do not have a headboard this can make one.And it is see through. And Romantic looking. Just use a ceiling hook. Hang it in half and two sides around the bed. It comes in allot of colors....Go with the red if you want. And add more pillows....And some Flowers and a nice teddy for you . Put it ON the bed before he gets home So he can see it. And Ooooo lala...Love is in the air
  7. I used a staple gun to tack christmas lights (on a white cord) on the ceiling of the room. At the hardware store, I bought a cheap extension cord that had a dimmer attachment. When I dimmed the lights, the ceiling looked like stars. The soft light made the room romantic, and sort of hid the fact that my furniture was mis-matched. Best decorating project I ever did. It felt safer than candles, and I could leave the dimmed lights burning all night as I slept with no fear. I also have to echo Cici's advice. If possible, take the TV out of the room.
  8. I bought a cheap water feature/light (Walmart). The soft glow and gentle sound of water really does it for my husband! Candles are great, but I don't like the open flame. Mine is similar to this one:

Pale blues, dusty pinks, and creamy whites pair nicely with richer taupes. While color schemes can vary in romantic-styled rooms, a space that contains a few soft, muted tones is much more conducive to rest and relaxation than several of bright hues. Furnishings should be feminine in romantic home decorating. Focus on a few items with graceful curves, then fill in with a mixture of more masculine attributes, like striped fabric, an overstuffed chair, and dark wood accessories. Fabrics in romantic decorating should be soft and supple, and for the utmost in luxury, use silk. When choosing accent pieces in romantic decorating, highlight a few cherished pieces. 11. candles always set a romantic atmoshpere, lots and lots of candles. pictures of the two of you would also be a great addition, i would recommend pictures of you guys hugging and if you can get a really good kissing picture that would seal the deal
  12. Romance is very important. Nothing is more natural than romance between a young couple. A natural theme in your bedroom may be just what you need. (See suggestions below for 'natural themed bedroom') If you are looking for more furniture, decorative items, or lighting... try Craigslist.com That is a website where local people in your area go to sell used/new furniture. It is like an online yard sale. Now...lets see..... First ....the mismatched furniture issue. Take all the furniture outside, remove the drawers, remove all the hardware....then.... Go buy a can of paint in the color you desire for your furniture. Get some sand paper and lightly go over the dressers. Use KILZ primer to prime the old furniture pieces .....let it dry.....then paint the color you want them to be. While at the hardware store....buy hardware for the front of the furniture that will all 'match'. Waaalaaaaaa matching furniture on a budget. Here is a suggestion for making your bedroom a restful/romantic love den. I would go with a natural theme in the room. That way your room would be a place where you go to escape and re-center your spirit. It is a bedroom so it is meant to be a place to rest and relax....a place of your very own where you feel very comfortable. Here is a great style idea that may help you in designing your room: Fung Shui ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In ancient times as well as today, Feng Shui, (風水) pronounced in English as [fʊŋ'ʃweɪ] ("fung shway"), was known as "Kan-Yu" which means 'The Law of Heaven and Earth.’ [1] Today's Feng Shui schools teach that it is the ancient Chinese practice of placement and arrangement of space to achieve harmony with the environment. Feng shui literally translates as "wind-water." This is a cultural shorthand taken from the following passage of the Zhangshu (Book of Burial) by Guo Pu of the Jin Dynasty:[2] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feng_shui ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Advice for your room design: PAINTING~~~~~~~~> Soothing colors such as greens, blues, browns are best in a bedroom. Stay away from 'hot' colors such as: reds, oranges, yellows as they tend to make a person feel more hostile and unrested. AIR/WIND~~~~~~~~~~~~> Add a decorative natural colored fan into the room as well to add the 'wind' element... wind is the element of change and allows the room to 'breathe'. Circulating the air in the room is very healthy for you as well. WATER~~~~~~~~~~~~~~> Have a table top fountain..... water is life giving and life sustaining. Hearing and being close to water is good for the soul and makes us closer to God. FIRE~~~~~~~~~~~~> Have a fake fire pit. This will be a square glass tray full of candles. Ten or more candles. No more than one scented candle in the bunch. Make sure the scent is a vanilla, lavendar, or jasmine. (No food smells...this will exite the senses which is just the opposite effect your looking for.) Light them while the water in the fountain is running. You will have sight, sound, and smell to sooth your spirit. This is a very romantic element as well. EARTH~~~~~~~~~~~> For a cool 'Rock Garden'....Use natural river rocks placed in sand as a decorative element in a large square or round decorative tray ...(even a glass baking dish would work)...be sure to include a small tool to be able to play gently in the sand and to be able to push the rocks around (this is a great relaxation technique). LIFE~~~~~~~~~~~> Large green plants will give the room life and air and energy ....it will make the room and you more healthy. Bamboo is great for this because it is probably one of the fastest growing, most hearty plants in the world. Caring for your plants will remind you to cherish your own life and the lives of the ones you love. MEDITATE AND CENTER~~~~~~~~~~~~> Your bedroom should be a place where you relax... unwind and re-center yourself. Teens are under tremendous amounts of stress related to school, living up to demands from parents and social responcibilities...teens are also stressed from physical changes inside the body as well. This room can be your escape from all that. Once you learn to control yourself and become a centered human being...you will be more able to take on the world outside. Start doing yoga or meditation. Put in floor pillows and a yoga mat. Maybe even a small floor level table with a comfy fluffy natural colored rug to sit on. You could place your 'rock garden' and 'fire pit' on this small table. (You could get an old coffee table and cut the legs down or off. If you cut the legs of the table off... just put books or concrete blocks under the four corners to make it the height you desire. About 18 inches high would be great. You can then cover the table with a bamboo mat as a sort of a 'table cloth' made of natural fibers. DECOR~~~~~~~~~~~> For bedding... use very soft wispy colors. Just a plain white comforter with white bed sheets. This will make you feel that your bed is clean and fresh. So you will awaken with a clean mind and fresh soul. Add decorative pillows and a throw over the top to add some drama to the bed... just a soft fuzzy beige or sage green for the throw.... and some silky textured designer pillows to decorate the top of the bed. CLEANSE THE SOUL AND THE SENSES~~~~~> Hide clutter... clutter will make your mind and heart feel cluttered. Studies have shown that people who have cluttered homes/rooms tend to have cluttered lives. This will effect your relationships with others, the work that you try to do, and the way you organize your life. That is to be avoided at all costs because it can become a dreadful life consuming habit. Tips: Make sure the room stays simple and clean at all times. Buy lots of storage and organizer things for the closet and underbed storage. These can hide shoes and purses and other things that do not need to be displayed in the room. If what you 'see, hear, smell, and feel' in the room does not add to your joy and make you feel positive.... then it should be hidden away or gotten rid of to make a clean and healthy space for you to live, grow, and love
