How to calculate number of hospital beds?
Hi, is there a model or any simple calculation to refer to, to do the sums for number of hospital beds? Given that I have fixed factors, example, of the current situation of number beds: 190, with patients average 500 monthly, length of stay is 3 days. Forecast demand is about 5000 patients. Thanks! Hi thanks for your prompt reply. =) The 5000 refers to in 6mths time. In this case, I use the comparison method to estimate the number of beds?

- Let's work on a month of 30 days. (If you meant 28 days then adjust calculation.) You have 190*30 = 5700 bed-days available per month. If patients come in at the rate of 500 per month and they have an average stay of 3 days then you require 500*3 = 1500 bed-days per month. This seems to show that there is plenty of spare capacity. I'm not sure what you mean by forecast demand is 5000. Does this mean that number could arrive in one month because of an epidemic? If so and their average stay remains 3 days then you need 15,000 bed-days so have way below what is needed. EDIT 5000 over the next six months means about 833 per month. If their average stay is still 3 days then you need 833*3 = about 2500 bed-days per month so there is still spare capacity. If you mean that hospital admissions will rise to 5000 per month in six months time then, as above, you will need 15,000 bed-days per month so 500 beds. However, this is only on average. There will be some days with less and some with more. Can you estimate from this the maximum number likely on any one day?
