how do i get rid of or prevent bed head?

i'd say i have medium length hair for guys, but i have a lot of it... every morning i wake up with bed head, i used to water it down but then it smelled really bad later in the day. How can i get rid or prevent bed head without using too much product like gel. Although any sprays stuff i tolerable. thanks dude!
